Juneteenth – June 19,1865

You guessed it, there is a sneaker for that! Let me start with learning a little more about Juneteenth before jumping right into footwear.

On this day in 1865, in the wonderful city of Galveston, TX, Major General Gordon Granger issued General Notice #3 (basically enforcing the Emancipation Proclamation that was placed into law two and half years prior). Jan 1, 1980, Texas was the first state to make Juneteenth holiday. It only took another 40ish more years to make it a Federal holiday but at least that time has come. (I’m interested to see what the Dakota and Hawaii are thinking)

I appreciate Nike for closing their stores (on a Saturday) for allowing their employees to celebrate. I am sure you are asking (at least you should be asking yourself)- What is a proper Juneteenth celebration? Believe or not: Strawberry Soda (or a red drink of some kind) and a barbeque. Let’s add some education and self reflection in there.

Looking very similar a Jordan 13

Now let’s get to the shoes. If you are interested please see the link below. Let me know your thoughts – leave a comment! I’m excited to hear what you think about the shoes:)

YES, A WOMAN DID THAT….

Women designers have made an impact on sneaker in a BIG way. Many people do not know the extent of that impact. Well, here is snapshot of women shoe designers and their creations.

SB Dunk High Pro Hawaii

These Dunks drop on April 23 in the SNKRS app. All you need is a Hawaiian print shirt, a Lei, maybe a grass shirt, a fruity drink and a beach. Sounds like a vacation in a shoe 🙂

There are some surprises with this shoe: the first layer of material is designed to tear away over time to reveal a different pattern, the tongue has a small pocket, the insoles have a illustration volcanoes and the official state bird and last bit not least alternative laces are provided.

And ‘A’ ole palikir (you’re welcome)

Lil Nas X – Why?

I struggle with even posting something about this because I have no desire to give life to this but I’m having a Drake moment- Yes, I am in my feelings. Personally, I think I am still in shock. If you haven’t heard, Lil Nas X collaborated with MSCHF to sell 666 pairs of Nike Air Max 97 with a drop of human blood in them. The shoes went on sale for $1018.00 on March 29, 2021. The shoe is known as the satan shoe.

Nike quickly put out a statement that said they have nothing to do with this development and sale of the black and red 97s with a pentagram and Luke 10:18 printed on them. Nike is suing the rapper (I hope MSCHF is included in the lawsuit).

Personally, I am shocked that someone(s) put enough thought into this idea to bring it to market. I am shocked at the manufacturer that made this possible, the collaboration, and the 666 people that purchased this shoe. (They apparently sold out in under a minute). We are still in a pandemic and the exchange of anyone’s bodily fluid that you do not know is extremely frightening to me. I decided not to post a picture of the shoe but here are the links to where you can see the shoes.

I really have questions BUT do I really want the answers? I don’t know. I really do not have the words.

Update: 4/1 – A temporary restraining order was issue against MSCHF and Lil Nas X from completing any additional order of the shoe. Lil Nas X comments “i haven’t been upset until today, i feel like it’s f—ed up they have so much power they can get shoes cancelled” – Really, IT’S NIKE’S DESIGN! Again, What do you expect?

MSCHF also release a Jesus Shoe. They were released in 2019. The soles of the shoe had Holy Water from the Jordan River. (You can walk on water) The Jesus shoe was also an Air Max 97. The shoe was outfitted with a crucifix, a notation from Bible verse Matthew 18:25 and drops of red ink symbolizing the blood of Christ. The price $3000. At least MSCHF is equal opportunity.

What is a Classic Sneaker?

Classic sneakers are those staples in closets that no matter what year it is they never go out of style even though they may not be as popular. Classics also have an nostalgic impact. In my opinion, everyone needs at least one of these pair in their closet because the go with just about everything: from jeans and a T-Shirt to a cute sun dress (from flowy to maxi).

I remember when I (all by myself) purchased my pair of air max 90s (they make an appearance on the list below).  It was a sunny day, in the spring and I was at South Square Mall in Durham, NC (today a Target and Sam’s Club live on that land).  I walked into Foot Action, I was greeted by Earlie.  Earlie was the manager at Foot Action and we quickly bonded over the love for shoes.  Earlie was my shoe enabler throughout my college years . I remember all the good times I had in those shoes.

Now lets get started with the classics – not in a particular order. (All shoes are shown in white)
