The Black Experience …

Air Max Plus

Welcome to Coren’s version of the Black Shoe Experience. Here are my picks of the best-looking all-black shoes. The criteria for this post is the shoes have to be all black. Better known as the ‘triple black’.

Black sneakers should also be a staple in your wardrobe. I am a firm believer that everyone should have 3-5 pairs of sneakers in the closet (even if you are not a sneakerhead). The all-black pair should be at least 1 pair you own. I’ll cover the others in a later post. Woohoo.

The black shoe has been traditionally been known as a work shoe. The all-black ‘work’ shoe has not been known as the most attractive shoe but it is typically comfortable. This post will give you the best options of where comfortable meet attractive.

The shoes below are not listed in any particular order but in my opinion, the best looking (and comfortable) all-black sneaks. By the way – Nike is winning in this category.

What’s your favorite? What do you have in your closet? Leave a comment on this post

Sneaker Review….Nike Crater Impact

Color Option: Black/Off Noir/Dark Smoke Grey/Iron Grey (Men and Women)

I ran across these sneakers at the Nike Clearance Center for $49.99. After trying them on, I thought they were cute, and for the price point “why not?” So, I decided to purchase them. It was worth it. Now, I have several pairs.

Here is what I like about them: color variety, versatility in styling, and overall comfort. I also love the detail. The stitching on the outside swoosh is ‘filled in’ and the stitching on the inside is an outlined swoosh. The shoes have a wide toe box so if you have any minor foot issues, they fit comfortably.

  • Fit: True to size
  • Comfortable: Yes
  • Pricing: $49.99 – $100 depending colorway and where you find them
  • Type of sole: Made of 25% Recycle Material
  • Color options: 8 different colors for women and 8 different colors for men (they have kid sizes too) fun for the whole family – oooooh matching outfits in family pictures:)
  • Lace Options: Thin laces
  • Sock options: thin to medium thick socks- thick socks may make the shoes slightly uncomfortable.
  • Weight: lightweight – they feel good on your feet
  • Favorite detail: the swoosh

It can’t be all positive, here is the one thing, I could do without. The extended tab for the laces …. what is it for…. I’m so confused. If anyone knows the purpose of the tabs, please let me know.

Here are the color options:

Color Option: Summit White/Platinum Tint/Photon Dust/Grey Fog (Women and Men)
Color Option: Light Bone/Bright Crimson/Orange/Black (Women)

Marge Simpson has a Shoe?

Dunk High Pro SB with Zoom Air (Picture courtesy for GOAT)

I definitely got Marge Simpson vibes from looking at this shoe. The base color of this SB Dunk is yellow to reflect Marge’s skin tone. The blue is designed to represent her iconic hair color. The green accents are a representation of her green dress and last but not least the sole of the representative is the pearls and matching shoes. I am a fan of bright colors and I think this shoe hits the mark! I also think dunks were the perfect representation. I actually tried to imagine this colorway in another silhouette: a ’77 Blazer, Air Force 1, or maybe an Air Max 90 but I think the Dunk was the perfect silhouette. I would love to see the colorway in a dunk low.

I wonder if Marge was a sneaker-head would she wear this shoe. I think she would approve. Although she may have to change up her style slightly (yellow-based shoe on yellow skin, probably not the best idea). I would style this shoe with green legging to match the swoosh and a white v-neck shirt. This way the shoes will be the star of the show. You can also wear denim jeans with a white t-shirt and a green (matching the swoosh) blazer.

The official name of the shoe is Nike Dunk High Pro SB ‘Marge Simpson’. The SKU number is 305050-731. Overall Materials: Suede and Leather. The original drop date was Jan 1, 2008, for $75 USD. If you are planning to purchase these shoes, the current resell price is somewhere between (drum roll) $450 – $2,500 (Ouch). This was made as a men’s shoe, if you are a female looking for this shoe look for a 1 1/2 size smaller (ex. a woman size 8 is a Men’s size 6.5).

If Cinderella was a Sneakerhead…

To me Cinderella was not a story about how a young girl who lost both of her parents was able to overcome her life circumstances to become a princess, Cinderella was a story about how a shoe transformed her life.
I started thinking, if Cinderella was a sneakerhead what would she wear? In the original 1950 version, she had 5 wardrobe changes. I will address 4 of the 5 outfits (I’m not counting the nightgown) As far as her footwear, she wore black flats, red heels, and the infamous glass slipper (heel).
First, let’s review Cinderella’s day-to-day activities. She does a lot of walking and cleaning. She spends a significant amount of time with animals. She also likes to dance and sing. That being said, she needs to be fashionable as well as comfortable.
Here is my take on what she would have in her closet.

Of course Cinderella would have a Glass sneaker!
Nike Dunks Holy Grails (Comfortable and Versatile, Cinderella could wear these with her wedding dress, her ball gown or day-to-day activities)
Nike Air Force 1 Low Upstep: Glass Slipper (Flashy, Stylish, and would go with her ball gown)
Nike Air Force 1 Mid UpStep: Glass Slipper (A pink and green sequin sneaker – can you go wrong? Also would look good with her wedding dress)
Nike Dunks Hi LX (Would match her maid outfit, comfortable and good for dancing)
Jordan 1 Triple Black (Every female needs a black shoe – and these are just plain pretty)
Nike Air Max React 270: Electronic Music (Cinderella wore red shoes with her pink and white dress. The React combines pink and red. This shoe would look super fly with the dress.)
Nike Huarache (Cinderella could replace the React 270 from the previous picture with these to wear with her pink dress- either sneaker is a win)
Van slip-on (Cinderella every day/around the house shoe)
Adidas Superstars (It’s a classic)
Reebok Princess (A Princess needs a Princess shoe)

Thank you for reading my thoughts, I would love to hear what you think. Please leave comments 🙂

Is Sneaker Culture Dying?

Has Sneakers Culture turned into a culture of privilege? What happened? Recently, I went to Sneakercon in the Bay Area. Let me lay the foundation – I decided last year that I really wanted to go to Sneakercon after I had a conversation with someone at work. I purchased my ticket and I was super excited. I went on Day 2.

I didn’t know what to expect but I had no idea what I was getting ready to experience…So I got there 15 mins earlier and the line started around the corner and roughly 2 blocks down. People were trying to buy sneakers off of other people’s feet. I was shocked. Almost everyone in line had at least one shoe box in hand. Some people had carts of shoes they were selling. The off-white dunks just dropped and they were highly sought after, but very specific one colors. I saw mostly the University of Michigan with the university red lace overlay (see below). After an hour of being in line, I finally walked into the showroom – it looked like a basement version of a Foot Locker or a Champs. The first thing I noticed was the placement of the vendors – when you first walked in – it was as packed together as clowns in a car. As you started to walk toward the back of the showroom the vendor space increased and the sneaker prices went down – weird. The closer you were to the entrance the higher price you paid for shoes. I had 3 goals at SneakerCon- learn more about designers, gain insight into the custom sneaker market, and get those citrus Jordan 11 and Dunks. (At this time – I couldn’t get an authentic pair of dunks at a reasonable price to save my life – key words reasonable price) – I will unpack that tidbit in a later post.

Off white Dunks

Back to the citrus Jordan and Dunks, the first couple of sellers didn’t have my size. I was told I should have come on day 1 – (irritating because people have to work so they can afford their sneaker habits – otherwise I would have been there) the next set of sellers set their price at a point I was not willing to pay: $300+ for dunks (for my non-sneakerheads – dunk retail for roughly $110) – I saw dunks as high as $2500. If you are thinking – at least they were of the off-white ones? I’m my Charlie Murphy voice – wrong!

Black and White Dunks aka The Pandas

Another observation- a complete and total lack of female representation from the vendors down to the shoes. They had kids and they had men’s – very few vendors had female sizes or products. Only 1 vendor had the Citrus Jordan’s – 1! This particular Jordan dropped as a female shoe. So disappointed. Representation matters!

Citrus Jordan 11

I was hoping to get more information on designs and concepts, and maybe learn about custom sneakers – nope! It was one huge overpriced marketplace. I was so disappointed.

The cool part was I got to see sneakers I’ve never seen and the ones I can’t afford…. which brings me to my original question – is sneaker culture dying? I went to the Nike Clearance store about 30 minutes before it opened. There was a line for the reseller (several resellers with their fold-out chairs) the fact that I have to compete with a reseller for a pair of Jordan 1 is crazy to me. I have to get to Nike an hour before it opens to get in line so I can get a better choice selection? They are going to take those $49.99 Air Force 1 shadows and flip them for $200. It’s easier (and less stressful) to order UA or a very good replica and wait a month to get them from China, Vietnam, or any other country that sells good reps. Some shoes aren’t worth the fight and I love sneakers!

Why pay $1650 for a shoe that only costs $120 in the first place? Let’s take a look at the Cactus Plant Flea Market Spiral Sage. The retail price was $120. See below

I’m feeling like the culture has turned into something exclusive, rich, and privileged – it hurts my feelings!

Maybe one day we can get back up the love of sneakers. I should not have asked myself “Do I get these sneakers or pay my rent/mortgage ?” For sneakerheads, this can be a real dilemma.

Cashmere Dunks

GOT’EM – After 12 months of trying to get dunks on the SNRKS app I FINALLY WON! YAY! Party over here… Party over there…. Party Everywhere :-). They do look a little different in person – I think I like them more now that I have seen them in person. The official color is White/Cashmere LT Lemon twist. I felt that it was only right to pair these Dunks with a song.

Song: Pink Cashmere by Prince

The ERRO collab: Lessons is my name

The I Matter Collection! I love these! This shoe features the music vibes with the look of a Converse. Can you go wrong with a Converse type shoe? (That is definitely a rhetorical question)

Here is what I love about them – I have a WHOLE page called footnotes – this shoe screams “I LOVE MUSIC”

I also love the colors. There is no mistaking the vivid colors and gramophone. With good music, comes emotions: you can feel the sadness or happiness the artist is experiencing when they are performing the song. Emotions are heavily related to colors. The calm: neutral colors and tones. The Happy: bright colors. The sad: dark colors and tones.

This shoe has it all the calm: gray. The happy: bright blue, orange, fuchsia, and purple. The sad/angry: various shades of blue and red. When I look at this shoe I hear and feel music even when it is not playing in the background (which is hella rare in my life)

Thank you, Eric Roberson (if you don’t know who he is – OMG! The music is fire 🔥) and the National Museum of African American Music for this collab.

How do you buy them? Well, I’m so glad you asked. Here is the link to order them. UPDATE: They are no longer available 😦
