Sneakerhead Lingo for Newbies (Part 2): When ‘Hype’ Isn’t Just a Buzzword

Alright, We survived Part 1, but the sneaker world is relentless. You thought you could casually say “kicks” without feeling like a fraud. Then a 19-year-old at Foot Locker hit you with, “You going for the drop?” and confusion sets in.

So here’s Part 2 of “Wait, That Means What?!”—your guide to sneaker slang that sounds like a secret society’s password.

1. “Resell Market”

What You Thought It Was: Where your ex sold whatever you “accidentally” left at their place.
What It Actually Means: The shadowy underworld where sneakers go to triple in price, run by people who treat StockX like the stock market (and your wallet like their personal ATM).
Reality Check: “It’s where dreams go to die and credit scores go to cry., because that Jordan your thought were cute are now $1200 when the retail price was $200.

2. “Drop / Cop”

What You Thought It Was: A bad police drama.
What It Actually Means:

  • Drop: The release of a sneaker—basically the digital Hunger Games.
  • Cop: Successfully buying the sneakers (or sobbing when your Wi-Fi betrays you).
Reality Check: “Drops are like dating—timing is everything, and you’ll probably get ghosted.”

3. “Kicks”

What You Thought It Was: The karate move you busted out in 5th grade and never lived down.
What It Actually Means: Sneakers. Yes, we’re fancy now.
Reality Check: “If you say ‘kicks’ and point at Crocs, we need to talk.”

4. “Hype”

What You Thought It Was: Your energy after two matcha lattes.
What It Actually Means: The frenzy around a sneaker release. If people are fist-fighting in line, it’s hyped. For the new generation, there are 1000 YouTube videos. The creation of 20 bots happens to obtain these shoes. There is content on Instagram, Pinterest, TikTok, and every other social media post about these shoes.
Reality Check: “Hype is the reason we’ll never financially recover.”

5. “Hypebeast”

What You Thought It Was: A mythical creature from a teen dystopian novel.
What It Actually Means: Someone who buys shoes just because they’re trending (and might sell a kidney for Supreme-branded anything).
Reality Check: “Hypebeasts don’t follow trends—they are the trend (and also why you can’t get a pair).”

6. “Retro”

What You Thought It Was: My aunt’s favorite home decor style.
What It Actually Means: Re-released classic sneakers—nostalgia you can wear (and flex on Gen Z with).
Reality Check: “Retros are just sneakerhead time machines—expensive ones.”

Retro Jordan 1
Adidas OG Samba
Reebox Shaqnosis (Definitely a retro sneaker)

7. “On Ice”

What You Thought It Was: Where your wine belongs.
What It Actually Means: Storing sneakers (usually unworn) to preserve their condition—think shrink wrap, boxes, even literal cold storage.
Reality Check: “If your kicks aren’t on ice, are you even serious about the game?”

8. “Fufu”

What You Thought It Was: That West African dish your friend’s mom makes.
What It Actually Means: Fake sneakers (aka “reps” so bad even PayPal would say nope).
Reality Check: “Fufu: When your heart says Off-White, but your bank account says Walmart.”

9. “Silhouette”

What You Thought It Was: Your shadow after a big lunch.
What It Actually Means: A sneaker’s shape/profile (e.g., “The Jordan 1 silhouette is iconic”).
Reality Check: “‘Silhouette’ just means ‘shape’—but using it makes you sound like a sneaker sommelier.”

10. “Factory Laced”

What You Thought It Was: The name of a high-tech gadget that automates everything but your coffee.
What It Actually Means: Shoelaces are tied exactly as they were when the sneakers left the manufacturing facility. It signals that the shoes are brand new and untouched—still in the same condition as when they came straight from the factory.
Reality Check: “Factory laced = untouched perfection. Like a museum piece, but for your feet.”

Factory laced Jordans

11. “Sneaker Drop”

What You Thought It Was: A new dance move.
What It Actually Means: Release day (depending on where you are in the worldyou are, it may be referred to as a launch)—when websites crash, bots win, and humans cry.
Reality Check: “Sneaker drops: Where hope dies and bots thrive.”

12. “Bot”

What You Thought It Was: A robot vacuum (RIP your Roomba).
What It Actually Means: Software that buys sneakers faster than you can click “checkout”—aka your arch-nemesis.
Reality Check: “Bots are the villains of the sneaker world (and why your cart is always empty).”

13. “Raffle”

What You Thought It Was: A church bingo night.
What It Actually Means: A “fair” way to buy hyped sneakers (emphasis on the sarcasm).
Reality Check: “Raffles are just sneakerhead lotteries—except the only prize is debt.”

Final Thought:

If you’ve made it this far, congrats—you officially speak Sneakerhead (or at least enough to fake it convincingly). Now go flex that vocab like it’s limited edition.

Missed Part 1? Click here—because ignorance was bliss, but clout is forever.

Still confused by a term? Drop it below (unless it’s “financial responsibility”—we don’t know her here). 😂👟

👟 A Day in the Life of a Sneakerhead Newbie: Let’s Learn Sneaker Terminology

One minute you’re minding your business, the next you might be in a full-on bidding war for UNC Jordan 4s or the Off-white Jordan 1s against a 14-year-old reselling out of his mom’s garage, and all you know is the shoe is cute. You try talking sneakers with your true sneakerhead and they’re tossing around words like “deadstock,” “cook group,” and “UA” like it’s common knowledge, while you’re just trying to flex without getting quizzed on release dates.

But don’t trip. I got you.

Whether you’re new to the game, secretly Googling “What does ‘DS’ mean?”, or just sick of being gatekept out of the sneaker culture — Part 1 of this guide is a good start. Let’s break down sneaker vocab with a little humor and a whole lot of swag. So you can rock heat with confidence!

Let’s get into it.

1. Deadstock

What you may have thought it meant: Something that died in a warehouse.
What it actually means: Brand-new, unworn, untouched shoes. Like… pure. Virgin sneakers. Basically, the sacred cows of the sneaker world.

Use it in a sentence:
“These are Deadstock — I haven’t even sniffed the box yet.”

2. Heat

What you may have thought it meant: Temperature.
What it actually means: Those fire sneakers that are rare, hyped, and/or coveted. If someone’s wearing heat, they probably paid rent/mortgage-level money for it, or they were fortunate to get them in a drop.

Use it in a sentence:
“She pulled up in pure heat — off-white Jordan 4s!”

Jordan 4 Off White Sail

3. Grails

What you may have thought it meant: Holy items. Religious energy. Maybe you thought about Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Sean Connery…. I digress.
What it actually means: The one pair of sneakers you dream about. Your sneaker soulmate. The pair that makes your heart skip a beat and your wallet cry (the ugly cry).

Use it in a sentence:
“Travis Scott SB Dunks are my grails. I’d sell a kidney.”

Travis Scott SB Dunks

4. Beaters

What you may have thought it meant: A white tank top.
What it actually means: Your everyday kicks that are probably dirty and might be slightly unsightly. Your workhorses. Your ‘don’t cry if it rains’ shoes.

Use it in a sentence:
“I wear my beaters to Target. Save the heat for brunch.”

Examples of Beaters

5. Backdoored

What you may have thought it meant: Literally a back door
What it actually means: When someone gets pairs from a store before the official release — usually through hookups or your sneaker plug. Think sneaker black market.

Use it in a sentence:
“I couldn’t hit on SNKRS, so I had to get them backdoored.”

6. Cook Group

What you may have thought it meant: A potluck.
What it actually means: A group of sneakerheads (usually online) sharing early links, bot info, and tips to ‘cook’ limited releases. Basically, the sneaker Illuminati.

Use it in a sentence:
“Joined a cook group last month. Still catching Ls.”

7. Colorway

What you may have thought it meant: Paint sample.
What it actually means: The specific color combo on a sneaker. Sneakerheads take colorways very seriously. VERY! Sneakerheads will have the same shoe in 10 different colorways if available.

Use it in a sentence:
“That UNC colorway hits different.”

UNC Jordan 1 Off White

8. SNKRS App (pronounced “Sneakers”)

What you may have thought it meant: A place to buy shoes.
What it actually means: A soul-crushing casino where you enter raffles, lose every time, and still come back everyday.

Use it in a sentence:
“I took my 37th L on SNKRS today. Mood: shattered.”

SNKRS App Logo

9. UA (Unauthorized Authentic)

What you may have thought it meant: A college
What it actually means: Shoes made in the same factories as retail pairs but not authorized by Nike/Adidas/etc. Technically not fake, but not legit either. It’s like the dark web of sneakers.

Use it in a sentence:
“They’re UAs but the quality is amazing. Don’t play with me.”

10. L / W

What you may have thought it meant: Just letters.
What it actually means: L = loss, W = win. You’ll see these terms everywhere post-release.

Use it in a sentence:
“Caught a W on the Jordan 3s today. I cried in the car.”

What a W looks like 🙂

11. Reps

What you may have thought it meant: Sales Associate or the person you thought you were dating but turns out he/she sent their “representative”.
What It Actually Means: The fake version of a sneaker (aka the one sneakerheads will side-eye you for wearing).

Use it in a sentence:
Paying $20 for Reps vs. $2,000 for resale? A moral dilemma only my wallet and ego can solve.

12. OGs

What you may have thought it meant: The way I describe myself after one mimosa or the Original Gangster
What It Actually Means: The original version of a sneaker (aka the one sneakerheads will side-eye you for if you call the new release “the same thing”).

Use it in a sentence:
“My bank account said no, but my heart said ‘OG or nothing’—so guess who’s eating ramen for a month?”

Jordan 1 OG Chicago

Sneaker culture is wild, hilarious, and surprisingly full of heart — once you learn the language. So whether you’re just getting started or lowkey addicted, I hope this glossary keeps you from asking, “Is Goat a pet app?” out loud.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have a SNKRS L to emotionally recover from.

Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Jaws with a Killer Sneaker Collection

Fifty years ago, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws terrified audiences and changed cinema forever. To celebrate this iconic film’s golden anniversary, we’re diving into the deep end with a curated list of sneakers that channel the suspense, style, and sheer menace of the great white shark. Whether you’re a movie buff, a sneakerhead, or both, these kicks will have you swimming in compliments—just watch out for those fin-tastic details!

1. A Bathing Ape Shark BAPE Sta M2

BAPE’s iconic Shark Sta sneakers are a streetwear legend, featuring the brand’s signature shark mouth graphic. While not officially Jaws-themed, the aggressive shark motif and colorways make these a perfect fit for fans of Spielberg’s classic. Pair them with a BAPE shark hoodie for maximum underwater intimidation.

2. Nike SB Dunk Low “Great White Shark”

A cult favorite, the Nike SB Dunk Low “Great White Shark” pays direct homage to the ocean’s apex predators. The shark replaces the swoosh, rip stitching on the tongue resembling jagged shark bite, and a blood-red outsole outline (if you know you know), these Dunks are a wearable tribute to Jaws. The insole has swimming sharks? Got to love the details.

3. Nike Air Max Plus “Shark Attack”

The Nike Air Max Plus “Shark Attack” is a legendary colorway that embodies the ocean’s danger. With gradient blue waves on the upper, sharp tooth-like details on the mudguard, and a sunset-inspired fade, this Tn model is a direct nod to the fear of the deep. The Air Max cushioning? Consider it your life raft.

4. Vans Sk8-Hi “Great White”

Simple but deadly, the Vans Sk8-Hi “Great White” keeps it clean with an all-white upper and a single gray shark graphic biting down on the logo. It’s a subtle nod to the film’s lurking terror—ideal for fans who prefer understated horror references.

5. ASICS EX89 “White Grand Shark”

ASICS brings the stealthy elegance of a great white to life with the EX89 “White Grand Shark.” This sleek retro runner features a clean white leather upper with sharp, shark-inspired blue/gray accents along the overlays and heel. This shoe a stealthy predator in any rotation.

6. ASICS Gel Nimbus 10.1 “Black Grand Shark”

The ASICS Gel Nimbus 10.1 “Black Grand Shark” is a deep-sea predator in sneaker form. With a sleek black mesh upper, metallic silver accents, and subtle shark-fin-inspired overlays, these runners are built for speed—just like Bruce the shark closing in on Amity Island. The Gel cushioning ensures you’ll glide as smoothly as a great white through the water.

Honorable Mention: Converse Chuck 70 “Jaws” Custom

While not an official release, custom artists have created Jaws-themed Chuck Taylors featuring the movie’s iconic poster art, bloody waves, or even the ominous dorsal fin. A DIY project or commission could make these the ultimate collector’s item for the anniversary. Anyone up for Custom Sneakers?

Final Thoughts

From Nike’s toothy SB Dunks to BAPE’s iconic Shark Sta and ASICS’ sleek shark-themed runners, these sneakers prove that Jaws’ influence runs deeper than the ocean floor. Just as Jaws left a permanent bite mark on pop culture, these sneakers immortalize its legacy in sneakerhead history. Whether you’re strolling the boardwalk or hitting the streets, these kicks ensure you’ll make a splash—without the danger of a shark attack.

Which of these shark-approved kicks would you wear to honor Jaws’ legacy? Drop your pick in the comments, and keep your eyes peeled for more killer collabs!

🎶 Dun-dun… dun-dun… dun-dun-dun-dun-dun-dun! 🎶

Nike Air Max Plus Drift Review: A Bold Remix of a Streetwear Classic

Nike’s been dropping remixes of their classic silhouettes. The Air Max Plus Drift is one of the most eye-catching updates. If you’re a fan of the original TN (Tuned Air) or just want something futuristic to heat up your sneaker rotation, then keep reading – I grabbed a pair and took them for a spin—here’s how they stack up.

Color: Sail/Team Gold (Picture from Nike)

Design & First Impressions:
Right out of the box, the Air Max Plus Drift screams attention. The updated wave pattern feels sharper and more layered than the OG, almost like it’s been digitally remastered. Combine that with some bold colorways—especially the gradients—and you’ve got a sneaker that definitely makes a statement.

This isn’t just a re-release—it’s a redesign. Nike leaned into the futuristic vibes, and it works.

On-Foot Feel:
Let’s talk comfort. The Tuned Air cushioning is still there and gives you that classic bounce underfoot. It’s responsive and easy to wear throughout the day.

That said, one thing I noticed right away: these run stiff. The upper, especially around the toe box and forefoot, doesn’t have a ton of flex at first. It’s not a dealbreaker, but don’t expect ultra-soft step-in comfort right out of the box. There’s a bit of a break-in period for sure.

Color: Deep Royal Blue (Picture from StockX)

Fit & Sizing:
The fit is true to size for most. If you’ve worn TNs before, the Drift will feel familiar. But for anyone with wider feet, that snug upper might feel tight—especially early on. The sock-like build hugs the foot, which some will love, but others might find restrictive.

Styling Tips:
These are straight-up lifestyle sneakers, and they work best in casual or streetwear fits. Pair them with cargo pants, tapered joggers, or even shorts—just let them breathe and do the talking. The silhouette is bold, so keep the outfit clean and let the shoes shine. Sizes are available in Big Kids, Women’s, and Men’s. The retail price is about $180, but they are on sale on Nike’s website.

Color: Dark Smoke Grey/Black/Vivid Purple/Total Orange (Picture from Nike)

Final Thoughts:
The Nike Air Max Plus Drift is a bold, futuristic remix of a cult classic. You’re getting strong visual energy, decent comfort, and that Tuned Air legacy in a street-ready package. Yes, they’re a little stiff out of the box, but with time they should ease up.

If you’re into bold designs, TN history, and want something that stands out—this one’s worth a spot in your rotation.

Style: 9/10
Comfort: 6/10 (due to stiffness)

Mighty Mouse
Mighty Mouse in the Happy Holland

🐭 Wait, Who Is Mighty Mouse?

For the uninitiated, Mighty Mouse is a vintage cartoon superhero who made his debut in 1942 as a parody of Superman. Named initially Super Mouse, he was quickly rebranded and became the mouse-sized powerhouse we know today.

Created by Terrytoons, Mighty Mouse starred in animated shorts through the ’40s and ’50s, before becoming a Saturday morning cartoon icon in the ’80s. He’s known for:

Because in this world, heroes don’t wear capes anymore…
they wear grails.

And somewhere in the distance, you’d hear:
“Here he comes to save the day – in that heat”

Sole Grooves: The Harmonious Connection Between Hip Hop and Sneakers

Hip Hop turned 50. Fashion and Sneakers are a huge part of Hip Hop Culture. I personally feel like you can’t celebrate Hip Hop without inviting sneakers to the party. These two cultural powerhouses, each with their own unique beat and style, have converged to create an unstoppable synergy. The fusion of rhythm and footwear has resulted in a dynamic partnership that goes beyond fashion and music. In this blog post, we’ll explore the intricate relationship between hip hop and sneakers, tracing their shared journey from the streets to the global stage.

Collaboration between Puma and A$AP Rocky

Kicking Off the Connection

Picture the vibrant streets of the Bronx in the 1970s, where the birth of hip hop and the emergence of sneaker culture occurred simultaneously. Both movements thrived on individualism, self-expression, and a thirst for authenticity. As hip hop artists took to the mic, they also donned their favorite sneakers, kicking off a connection that would shape the course of cultural history.

Collaboration between Jordan and Eminem
Collaboration between Nike and Terror Squad
Collaboration between Puma and Big Sean

From Boomboxes to Boom Kicks

Hip hop and sneakers share more than just physical space; they’re both mediums of expression. Just as DJs scratched vinyl records to create new beats, sneakerheads customized their kicks with paints, markers, and fabrics, giving birth to the concept of personalized footwear. This creative synergy manifested in sneakers becoming an extension of the hip hop artist’s persona – an artist’s instrument both on and off the stage.

Collaboration between Nike and Roc-a-fella Records
Collaboration between Nike and Wu Tang
Collaboration between Puma and J.Cole

Iconic Collaborations: Beats and Feet Unite

In the world of hip hop, collaborations are celebrated – whether it’s artists coming together for a track or brands teaming up for limited-edition releases. Sneaker collaborations emerged as a testament to this shared culture of partnership and innovation. From Run-D.M.C.’s legendary endorsement of Adidas Superstars to Nelly dropping gems about Air Force 1 to Kanye West’s Yeezy line with Adidas, the fusion of hip hop and sneaker brands solidified their intertwined destiny.

Step Up the Hype: Sneaker Fever and Rap Flair

Sneaker releases and rap albums share a similar frenzy – fans eagerly await both, and both can become instant cultural phenomena. Sneaker drops boast lines of enthusiasts outside stores, camping out for a chance to snag a coveted pair. Similarly, hip hop albums can dominate charts and dominate conversations. The anticipation, the excitement, and the energy unite in an electrifying spectacle.

Collaboration between Puma and Rihanna (Fenty)
Collaboration between Nike and Drake (Nocta)
Collaboration between Nike and Megan thee Stallion

Beyond the Beat: Social and Cultural Impact

Hip hop and sneakers have also influenced social and cultural narratives. Hip hop has been a platform for addressing societal issues, while sneakers symbolize empowerment and individuality. The connection between these two realms has empowered people to express their identity, challenge norms, and push for positive change.

Collaboration between New Balance and Donald Glover
Collaboration between Adidas and Donald Glover
Collaboration between Nike and Kendrick Lamar

Hip hop and sneakers have seamlessly intertwined, creating a harmonious connection that transcends music and fashion. Together, they’ve redefined self-expression, authenticity, and individuality. Their journey from the streets of the Bronx to global stages and runways demonstrates their profound influence on shaping culture and inspiring generations. As we continue to move to the rhythm of hip hop and walk in the footsteps of iconic sneaker releases, let’s celebrate this dynamic duo that continues to make its mark on the world.

If Princess Tiana was a Sneakerhead…

In the enchanting world of Disney princesses, we often see our beloved characters pursuing their dreams and passions, but what if we imagined them outside of their traditional roles? Today, let’s take a walk through a vibrant and fashionable alternate universe where Princess Tiana, the spirited heroine from “The Princess and the Frog,” embraces her inner sneakerhead. Join us as we explore how this determined princess would mix her regal charm with sneaker culture in the magical city of New Orleans.

1. Sneaker Royalty:

Princess Tiana would redefine royal fashion with her unique sneaker style. Known for her impeccable taste, she’d combine her elegant dresses with a variety of trendy kicks, making heads turn at royal gatherings. Whether rocking a ball gown with Swarovski Crystal Air Max 97 or pairing her classic green princess attire with limited-edition Nike x Cactus, Tiana would demonstrate that sneakers can elevate any outfit.

2. The Sneaker Hunt:

Princess Tiana’s tenacity knows no bounds, and that would apply to her sneaker hunting adventures too. Imagine her traversing the bustling streets of New Orleans, scouting for elusive sneaker releases, and engaging with fellow sneakerheads. Her relentless pursuit of the perfect pair would inspire others to embrace their passions fearlessly.

3. Crafting Sneaker Magic:

Just as Tiana’s culinary skills were unparalleled, her creativity would extend to customizing sneakers. We can envision her putting her artistic flair to work, designing personalized kicks that reflect her love for New Orleans’ vibrant culture. From intricate patterns inspired by Mardi Gras to shoes adorned with water lilies, her custom creations would be nothing short of enchanting.

4. Sneakerhead Community:

In our reimagined tale, Tiana wouldn’t keep her passion for sneakers to herself. She’d embrace the sneakerhead community with open arms, hosting events in the bayou and encouraging enthusiasts to come together. Sharing stories, swapping tips, and appreciating sneaker artistry would be some of the ways she’d bond with her fellow sneakerheads.

5. A Sneaker Princess with Purpose:

Tiana’s journey in her original story taught us the value of hard work and determination. As a sneakerhead princess, she’d continue to inspire her kingdom by using her platform to support charitable initiatives, leveraging her love for sneakers to raise awareness for causes close to her heart. Sneaker auctions and charity events would become a regular feature on her calendar.

In this delightful reimagination of Princess Tiana’s story, we discovered a whole new facet of her character—her passion for sneakers. Through her love for these stylish kicks, Tiana would bridge the gap between royalty and sneaker culture, breaking stereotypes along the way. With her elegance, resilience, and enthusiasm, Princess Tiana would show the world that one can embrace multiple passions and interests, reminding us that true princesses are defined by their open hearts and dedication to what they love. So, let’s raise a toast to Princess Tiana, the royally stylish sneakerhead!

Remember the time…?

Behold my fellow readers…Today, I find myself overwhelmed with nostalgia. I couldn’t help but ponder upon the golden era of being a sneakerhead. Undoubtedly, the 80s and 90s stand out as the pinnacle of sneaker greatness. It was during this period that innovation, exceptional sneaker designs, and the growth of sneaker culture converged to create a phenomenon.
The celebration of sneaker culture became ubiquitous, embraced not only by athletes and musicians but also by the fashion industry. Streetwear and sneaker culture complemented each other seamlessly, defining a unique style that became a lifestyle.
Back then, various sneaker companies played a significant role in shaping the sneaker culture, many of which have faded from the limelight today. In this post, I will take you on a journey through time to reminisce about the sneakers and companies that contributed to this beloved subculture. However, I’ll refrain from focusing on the well-known Nikes (surprisingly!) and brands like Adidas, Reebok, Asics, Puma, or Saucony. So, let’s embark on this exciting trip down memory lane.
